Council’s annual reseal program involves adding another coat of bituminous seal to existing sealed roads. As sealed roads age the bituminous seal oxides and becomes more brittle leading to more potholes. Resealing roads also helps mitigate other forms of failure, such as crocodile cracking. The reseal program also includes installation of final seals on previous road reconstructions. Road resealing is a maintenance activity to prolong the life of the existing sealed road network.

Newly constructed roads use a primerseal, which is designed to penetrate the pavement and improve waterproofing, the primerseal is not designed to last long term and generally has a final seal installed in the following financial year.

Council’s reseal program generally happens in February or March of each year. The appointed contractor normally takes two to three weeks to deliver the whole program. In general it only takes a few hours to reseal a road segment and delays are short.

The program for 2024-25 commenced in early December in Clunes and will be moving across the Shire, from rural areas around Dean and Smeaton to urban roads in Daylesford, Clunes, Creswick and Trentham. in 2024-25 the program will deliver around 19km (or 109,500 m2) of road this year. We prioritise roads based on official road inspections and their condition data.
