Project update

The Open Access Libraries project commenced at The Mechanics Trentham on Monday 31 March. The installation is scheduled to take two weeks. The installation of Open Access Library infrastructure occurred between April through September and is now complete at all four library locations.

Project overview

The Open Access Libraries initiative enables inducted library members to access library spaces and services in non-staffed hours. The libraries will be accessible to library members from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm including regular staff hours (please note, sites will close to all library members and members of the public over lunch).

Open Access means library members have more opportunity to borrow, return and pick up reserved library items, use WiFi and public PCs, study in quiet spaces and use the print, scan and copy services.

How to participate

All four library and community hub venues (Daylesford Library, Clunes Warehouse, Creswick Community Hub and Mechanics Trentham) will become Open Access Libraries. Daylesford Library will be our trial site, with other locations planned to open 2026.

Community members are encouraged to ask questions about Open Access and to join their library services to be able to take advantage of Open Access.

Existing library members are invited to consider whether Open Access will enable them to make greater use of their libraries.

Library members who want to be able to access the libraries during the Open Access hours will need to be inducted and have their library cards upgraded

Next steps

We will provide regular updates through the Council website, community newsletters and social media about how the project is progressing.

When the induction process is finalized, we will encourage community members and library members to come and discuss the process at their local library and community hub.
