Project overview
Council is proactively investing in the future safety and resilience of Creswick through the updated Creswick Flood Mitigation Study.
This study builds on earlier flood investigations and lessons learned from recent flood events in 2016 and 2022, using modern modelling and data to better understand flood behaviour across the township.
Importantly, the study does more than identify flood risks. It provides a practical roadmap for future mitigation works, emergency planning improvements and long-term infrastructure investment. The study investigates six priority locations across Creswick and identifies opportunities to improve stormwater drainage, overland flow management, flood storage and local infrastructure resilience.
Council acknowledges and thanks the community for sharing local knowledge and lived experience throughout the project, particularly following the 2022 flood events. Council also thanks the North Central Catchment Management Authority (NCCMA) and project stakeholders for their ongoing partnership, technical expertise and contribution to improving flood resilience in Creswick.
This study is an important step toward ensuring Creswick is better prepared for future flood events while supporting informed, balanced and evidence-based planning for generations to come.
The flood study was co-funded by Emergency Management Victoria’s Risk and Resilience Grants Program.
Stage 1 mitigation works are co-funded by the Victorian Department of Justice and Community Safety’s Disaster Ready Fund.
Mitigation projects
The map provides an overview of the six subject sites. Mitigation projects aim to reduce risk downstream or in the immediate area. The mitigation projects are a combination of upgrades to stormwater capacity, redirections, retention basins and increased pumping capacity. It is noted that the total estimated cost of works is $6-8M, the nature of which allows for a staged implementation. Each location operates independently, meaning works at one location will not reduce the risk in others. External funding will be critical to delivering these projects.
