Project overview

Unfortunately, the Blue Atlas Cedar (Cedrus atlantica 'Glauca') located at the entrance to the Creswick Visitor Information Centre (VIC) will need to be removed due to its declining condition and associated risk.

Recent storm damage has significantly reduced the tree's safe useful life. The tree experienced a branch failure (leader peel out) as a result of underlying structural defects known as bark inclusions. Further inspection following this failure has identified internal decay at the branch union and reduced structural integrity of the remaining canopy branches.

As a result, the remaining canopy is considered unstable, with an increased likelihood of further branch failure, particularly during high wind events. Given the tree's prominent location with high pedestrian traffic in the area, this presents an unacceptable level of risk to public safety. Council arborists have assessed potential retention options, including canopy cabling. However, these measures would not sufficiently mitigate the risk in this context.

The tree needs to be removed, and if this proceeds the site would then be prepared for a suitable replacement as soon as practicable.

In line with Council's Tree Management Plan, communications have been shared to inform the community and other relevant stakeholders and signage has been installed onsite. We are also working through the process to ensure all necessary approvals are in place prior to scheduling any works.

Council acknowledges the significance of the Blue Atlas Cedar and is greatly disappointed that it needs to be removed. Council does not make these decisions lightly, especially when it involves removing a living, natural asset. Council has investigated many options to retain the tree, but unfortunately, they don't seem appropriate in mitigating the risk or provide a good long-term outcome.

Any salvageable timber from the cedar will be sent to DJAARA Timbers for milling as part of our Reconciliation Action Plan.
